Tivo doesn't stand behind their product and the warranty is worthless. September 3, 2010 K. Thomas (DC) Do not purchase the extended warranty. I purchased a 3 year extended warranty and my tivo broke after 8 months. We put up with the initial Tivo even though it would not record voice on both turners at the same time like advertised, but when the network card went out, we thought we would get it serviced. The network card went bad, so they sent me another unit, which had a hard drive failure within one day. I got a second exchange and was told my extended warranty would not cover the replacement unit and is void after the 1st exchange.
Brandon the customer service person was no help at all. I will never buy anything with a tivo logo again.
Free TV for over 2 years! August 31, 2010 larryhat (Texas) I believe if most folks knew how incredible the digital picture is with these units, they would drop satelite/cable in a heartbeat. We realized almost 3 yrs ago that 90% of what we DVR'd, was the standard free TV stations. So, when digital came along, I bought a very small outside antenna to see how many stations and what quality they would be. When the scan complete (Dallas/Ft.Worth) I had picked up over 50 channels! The HD picture is as good if not better than my old satelite hd programming. So, we dropped our provider ($75 month) and bought our first Tivo box from Amazon. Bought the lifetime service pack with it so we could record 2 programs at a time and have the tv guide feature. With buying the lifetime service, the tivo box, and my antenna, I spent around $550. Needless to say, in 8 to 9 months we had paid for this investment and since have been enjoy true free tv. However, if you are hung up on a program on cable, you can go to amazon/tivo on the web, and buy a season pass for whatever show you want for $1.89 an episode. Example, we love The Closer...so we just download it straight to our Tivo via our wireless connection on the computer! If I was a wee bit smarter and knew how to tell folks about this in an easier way, I would start up my own company and sell this service everywhere!
Liked it so much, we bought another! August 18, 2010 Wes I bought this Tivo for streaming Netflix to my TV, which it does a great job with. I always just used the DVRs that the cable company had, but when we moved to a place that only had satellite, discovered that not all DVRs are the same. We immediately switched back to Tivo and even got another for the other room.
The DVR functionality is good. I wish it would highlight the shows that were going to tape later on, but other than that it's easy to set up and easy to use.
What I like most about the Tivo is that I can stream Netflix and other video to my TV. My wife has done the free workout videos and we've rented a few Amazon movies as well. Never had a problem with the image and it's been easy to use no matter what setup we used. We used to have it connected to cable using a cable card, which was very easy to set up, and now we have it connected to standard cable and an HD antenna, works like a charm.
Completely died in less than 2 years August 12, 2010 Scott Rose (Los Angeles, CA USA) This product just goes to show how low TiVo's quality has sunk over the years. I bought this device on June 2, 2008. Within 14 months, the HDMI port completely failed on the back of the TiVo. I called TiVo, and they of course wouldn't fix it because it was out of warranty. (But they would gladly sell me a new one for $200!) So I rewired my entire television cabinet so that I could use the component video port instead. Then, 2 months later, the entire TiVo died completely. Some part on the motherboard failed and the TiVo will only start up to a black screen. So now I have a completely dead TiVo. $200 for a brand new one. Ridiculous. I will never buy a TiVo again. It's so much cheaper to get the exact same thing from your cable provider instead. And they will at least fix it for you for free.
Love my TiVo August 3, 2010 Michael A. Saxton (USA) This item has been reviewed plenty of times so I won't fill a whole page with my review. This is the greatest DVR ever. The capacity is great, the quality is great, I have absolutely no complaints. It hooks up with various online services so it's more than just something to watch movies on. If you have been debating on whether or not to get a TiVo, debate no more. Take the plunge. It's worth it.
