BlackSite Xbox360 April 14, 2010 Patrick Esquire (New York) Its a pretty fun 1st person shooter with a good adventure feel to it. The game does have some minor programing glitches every now and then, such as an occasional drag during heavy combat and the controls are not as accurate as Call of Duty modern warfare, but for under $20 bucks the game is worth it. The seller sent the game to me relatively quick and it was in the same condition as advertised.
Way Better Than Expected! April 5, 2010 Tropicalwolf (Ohio, USA) I picked this game up at a "going out of business sale" (all too common these days). I bought it based on the subject matter (aliens and Area 51) and less on actual facts or reviews. First off, this is actually a really fun game. Short, about 4-6 hours. I think that is the first thing that truly surprised me. Is it original (from a FPS point of view), no. The shooting is basic, the targeting isn't always "spot on" (i.e. sometimes you don't need to hit your target to get them to fall), the "squad commands" are generic, and the driving takes some getting used to...but it is STILL FUN! For what it is, it delivers! The dialogue will make you laugh, which is perfect since this game doesn't take itself too seriously. I think any gamer who goes into this game with a similar attitude won't be disappointed. My only two major gripes are more of pet-peeves than actual complaints. So many developers take a ton of time trying to get details correct (guns, uniforms, vehicles, etc.) which is to be commended. However, inevitably in ANY and ALL games these days there is a bathroom you can walk into. Sorry to tell you guys, bathrooms in the Middle East (specifically Iraq) are significantly different from American/European bathrooms (if you've been there, you know what I mean). If you are going to take the "cheese route" and put these particular details in a game, make sure you have it right. Also, what ever happened to big, dramatic endings in video games? Playing the older games (NES, Sega Genesis, etc) the ending cinematic was always the "pay-off." Too many games these days lack this simple item. They waste tons of time on cinematic elements throughout the game that only serve to break-up game play and then get stingy with the finale. That is more a comment on all games these days rather than just Blacksite. Other than that, Blacksite: Area 51 is a fun game. I would recommend it highly, especially if you get it for less than $15.
kinda fun - kinda painful January 27, 2010 A. Pullen 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
+Fun shooter to kill time
+you get to drive vehicles
+Neat concept
-That falls way short of expectations
+'90s felling
-'90s feeling
-Thin story line that isn't exlpained well enough... you can piece it together... but it probably isn't worth it to try as you could make a better story to go along with the game play... or you could have a small child come up with a plot - seriously, the plot is pathetic
-only 5 guns!?
-generic looking enemies that aren't explained
-short
+short (I'm not sure you would WANT to play any more of this game)
-horrible audio with even worse dialogue
-glitches galore... i spent 15 minutes trying to figure out where to go, only to realize that I had beaten the level and the cut scene didn't load
-bland level design
-non-existant squad-based tactics... during a loading sequence, the game actually hinted that you should send in your squad first and "mop up what's left"... I'm not sure, but I think most people play games to PLAY the game, but it doesn't matter anyway, sense the AI doesn't follow to your commands.
-anti-climactic
In short, it's a fun, mindless shooter with very, very little substance. I recommend a rent, but if you HAVE to own it, buy it as cheap as you can, you'll thank yourself, I know I did.
Major improvement! December 31, 2009 Gradient Vector Field (MA, USA) I'll admit, after playing through the first game my expectations for this follow-up was far less. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself having a lot of fun playing through this game. Granted they're not bringing anything new to the table, but sometimes sticking to the tried and true methods works fine. In this case it did, while it's not original, I still found this game quite fun. They're using the Unreal graphics engine, but they seem to have designed it to be a lot more like Half Life 2.
The storyline is also much improved in my opinion. It doesn't feel as completely outrageous as the first game. The first game was so out there that it became sort of stupid after a while. But Blacksite deals more with developing new technologies. So you spend most of your game fighting these super soldiers and robotic machines. There are some alien creatures to fight as well, and they look a lot better than the ones you fought in the first game. They actually look a little like the things from Independence Day, in their battle suits, but walking on all fours. There are also these behemoth like creatures that come out of the ground that you have to kill.
An added element that I thought was really cool was that you get to drive around in vehicles this time. Usually I'm really iffy about these things because it's always a gamble when it comes to vehicle controls. Luckily the vehicles are fairly easy to control in my opinion. The only problem I have is that you can go really fast with them and it's hard to control at certain speeds. Then again... I've never seen a game handle the speed functionality all that well. I think Halo is the only one I can think where I felt pretty satisfied with the vehicle controls.
Like in the last game you do get a squad that can work with you. This actually goes on for most of the game. Thankfully the AI is still good in this regard; the squad never really seemed to get in my way and was actually helpful rather than a detriment. I like seeing that companies are finally starting to get these aspects correct.
The weapons in this game were pretty run of the mill. I felt like I had access to more alien technology in the last game, but the lack of this didn't hurt this game any for me. I really enjoyed using the sniper rifle a lot in this. That functionality was better compared to the last game, if I remember correctly.
The environment this time around was a lot more destructible and I found that a lot more fun. One part that was kind of annoying, though, was that you could destroy these crates, but there was never anything in them! Don't these developers know that if you can destroy crates in a game you put ammo or some other incentive in there? They did keep the dossier search from the last game. This encouraged me to search out the environment and world a lot more and I'm glad they kept this feature as well.
If you really enjoyed Half Life 2 and games of that ilk, then Blacksite: Area 51 won't steer you wrong. Sure you might not be nearly as engrossed with it, but it's a fun game. It's definitely not worth full retail price, but it's worth getting when the price drops. It's actually not a very long game either, but I feel like it's just the right length. This is the type of game you don't want hitting epic levels, because it would just get overly redundant. It never reaches that point and the game feels like it's just long enough.
Bang for your Buck October 23, 2009 S. H. Wells (Tulsa, OK United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Blacksite is a pretty fun first person shooter. It recalls the Call of Duty games in style and method of play with a little squad-based tactics thrown in for fun. The plot is a little confused (but who is really playing FPS for the story?). But you have a variety of weapons--many old favs like sniper rifle and grenades as well as some futuristic weapons. Your squadmates get happy the more bad guys you kill and they get bummed if you get beat up or pinned down. And the baddies range from Iraqis to alien/monster things. The screen gets redder the dead-er you get, but ducking for a while lets you get your wind back. And the checkpoints are frequent, so you restart not TOO far back from where you die (both features similar to CoD). A lot of reviews were luke-warm about the title, so I bought mine used through an Amazon marketplace seller. In my opinion it is solid 5-star bang for your buck. No, Blacksite is not as in depth as CoD4 and requires a lot less finesse than GRAW. But if you can find it for a good price, it sure is a heck of a lot fun.
