5 out of 5 stars One of the best games ever!   August 5, 2010
S. Waiblinger
Rarely does a game come along that intrigued me with its storyline as much as Mass Effect did. I typically do not like RPG games a lot, but Mass Effect had me captivated. Bioware has created several masterpieces in its time, and this is one of them. Here are a few thoughts on the game itself:

The inventory system is fun, but can get annoying later in the game when you keep having to sell (or convert to omni-gel) your items.

The mini-games (for hacking things) are pretty easy and you will almost always successfully hack whatever you are trying to open.

Exploring planets can get really boring the second and third play-throughs. The MAKO needs to go faster!

The amount of depth for each character is incredible. You learn their likes, dislikes, history, etc. Every person has their own personality, and it is evident from the way they behave.

Your decisions throughout the game affect the outcome. Always the sign of a good RPG.

The balance of character classes is a little off. Unfortunately biotic powers are not nearly as strong as weapons in this game, so playing as an adept is much harder than as a soldier.

There are tons of planets to discover in the Mass Effect universe. Going to all of them and uncovering the stories there makes not only this game much more interesting, but also contributes greatly to Mass Effect 2!

This is one of the top games of the decade and one tha thas lots of replay value. I highly recommend it for somebody looking for a fun action game with an extremely immersive story.

5 out of 5 stars The decades best RPG for consoles?   August 4, 2010

The Mass Effect Trilogy may be one of the greatest Rpg's for consoles. Mass Effect 1 is no exception. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of Bioware.

5 out of 5 stars As close to perfect as a game can get   August 2, 2010

Before I played Mass Effect, I had no idea what type of game it was. As I loved Bioshock due to its Karma system, a friend of mine recommended me Mass Effect and now that I have played through Mass Effect 2, boy am I glad that I was recommended this game. So what is so special about Mass Effect.....

CHOICES/KARMA SYSTEM: In this game, you will have to make so many at many different levels and each choice you make will give you positive, negative or neutral karma and will have MAJOR impact on the game's story, missions and gameplay experience. You can be a paragon of justice or a renegade who gets the job done with whatever means necessary. Best part, you don't have to be either good or evil throughout the game, should you choose you can make both positive and negative karmic choices throughout the game. A lot of these choices will be made by simply having conversion with plethora of people in the game; however, you will also make choices by your action and type of character you choose.

MAKING YOUR OWN CHARACTER: In Mass Effect, you can be male or female of any ethnicity or color. In a lot of games you are stuck playing a character that you may not like. Not in this game. In this game, you can be any type of character you want to be. Furthermore, you can also choose class of your liking for your character. For example if you love different types of weapons, you can be a soldier. If you like sci-fi psychological powers, you can be biotic. You are a hacker, then you can be tech. And again, what you become will have great impact on your gameplay experience.

CREATE YOUR OWN TEAM: Along with your main character, you can also controller two other characters. Again, you can choose who those two characters can be. You can have a good looking female soldier, a tech specialist quarian, a violent krogan, a tactical turian, a biotic asari or a cyborg. Again who you have on your team will greatly affect how much you get out of your mission and outcome of your mission.

WEAPONS AND POWERS: As mention in above section, yourself and your allies can be from various classes and each weapon, armor and power you can use is upgradable. Throughout the game you will come across plenty of variety of weapons and armors (depending on how much you explore), each with their unique advantages.

OPEN WORLD GAMEPLAY: In this game, you have plenty of galaxies to explore. You can travel from galaxy to galaxy, landing on different planets as you wish. Plenty of missions and exploration. Just loved it.

VEHICLES: You have a vehicle for different planet exploration. So along with third person shooter gameplay, you also have access to this vehicles to search different planets for resources and blow your enemies into bits.

GREAT RPG EXPERIENCE: Leveling up can become addicting, especially since you have control over what particular traits you want your character or allies to have improved.

AMAZING STORY: It is possible to get side tracked by side missions, but the main story is freaking awesome and somewhat suspenseful.

GREAT REPLAYABILITY: The game was about 50-60hr long the first time around for me. If you play as paragon, you would want to play it again to experience the story as a renegade and vice versa. Especially if you decide to go after the achievements, you will be playing this game over and over again.

As for cons, the game does have some glitches and combat doesn't feel as smooth as I would like, but that will not bother you as this game has so much fun to offer you. If you like RPG, star wars and shooters, this is the game for you.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!   July 21, 2010
Ajz
9.5 Presentation
A new high mark for storytelling in games. Gameplay can be confusing at first due to a lack of good tutorials.

9.0 Graphics
One of the most artistically and technically beautiful games of all time. Unfortunately, the engine can't keep up and slowdown is rampant.

10 Sound
An unprecedented amount of top-notch voice work.

9.0 Gameplay
The RPG elements are outstanding. Glitches, poor AI, and weak squad mechanics weigh the game down.

9.5 Lasting Appeal
Sure to be a classic RPG that is talked about (and played) for years

5 out of 5 stars D@mn you, Bioware! Why can't you just leave me alone!?   July 14, 2010

Ok, Bioware. I give up. You win...again.

You had my attention with the KOTOR series. You captivated my heart with Jade Empire. Now this? Really?! Mass Effect just sealed the deal. I'm no expert when it comes to game design but I'll do my best to briefly give you a list of why this is an RPG players' (my) wet dream.

*Sexiness checklist*

+ Space Themed. But it's not Star Wars or Star Trek...how is that even possible!?! I smell a new cinema series...
+ Gameplay. Third person shooter with "on the fly" abilities.
+ Upgrades. Characters, weapons, armor, biotics (it's sorta like magic for those who don't know) and tech skills. Where to begin?
+ Party selection. Stick with the same characters or switch 'em up.
+ Exploration. To the end of the galaxy. Literally.
+ Morality. Practically every decision you (the gamer) make, will have a karmic effect. Converstions with NPC's (Non Playable Characters) and other decisions play a roll in this. You wanna be Mr. Nice Guy? You wanna be an upset, sandy vagina? It's your choice.
+ The script. It's totally a cinematic experience. You can actually get attached to the characters.
+ Graphics. Boner...I mean...eye popping. I sometimes feel bad for my 360 having to push out all that realism. Lucky for me, my Xbox had taken lamaze classes. We now have a brand new graphics baby.
+ Replayability. 3 times. I'm somewhat of a completionist when it comes to games. All the achievements can be attained with 3 play throughs. I did it, yay!
+ Sound. Lasers, spaceships and aliens, oh my! Granted nothing of this caliber exsists (yet), the sounds are authentic.
+ Soundtrack. Sci-Fi to the core. Aptly, it creates an awesome sense of vastness and wonderment.

*The not as sexy but will take on a few dates checklist*

- The Mako. It's extremely resilient and great to get around in but the controls don't always feel like nipplez. Also, unless you have been visited by the spirits of 'Lois and Clark', get ready to do a $#!7 load of exploration in the Mako. It will, at times, become painfully drone.
- Snails. Sometimes during a big firefight, the system bogs down causing a choppy frame rate and a less-fluid gameplay. We need some more lamaze classes.
- Possessed. During a few conversations with NPC's, their eyes would appear to roll up in the back of their head. Someone call an exorcist!

Not 5 stars but 5 galaxies from me. Once again, D@mn you, Bioware!
