5 out of 5 stars Old-school action never looked better!   October 1, 2008
Benjamin J. Gillespie (Higganum, CT)
If any of you have played the first Nanostray, you know how annoying it was to use the stylus to change the position of your weapon satellites while trying to navigate the ship without getting blown up. Thankfully, the only real flaw with the original Nanostray has been corrected in this glorious sequel as you can now reposition your satellites with the L and R buttons. That being said, this game is ridiculously addictive and nearly perfect as far as shooters go. This game is VERY hard to complete, even on the easy setting. You can play any level that you have unlocked in Story mode in the Arcade mode...which is a great way to practice and memorize the levels so that you can dominate those baddies! The Challenge mode is fun and...challenging of course, it opens up some fun mini-games for you if you can win. This is arguably the best looking game on the DS, bright, shiny graphics and not a hint of lag or slowdown even when the screen is completely full of enemies...which is often. One level seems to be a total homage to Lifeforce, a Konami shooter on the NES WAY back in the day that in my opinion is still the pinnacle of all side-scrolling shooters, to see a new game give it a shoutout made me smile. This game will definitely take you awhile to beat, but it's worth it, nothing like beating a game that sometimes seems unbeatable. All in all, you'd be hard pressed to find a better modern space shooter than this, if you like shooters and you have a DS, BUY IT.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun, amazing graphics, left me wanting more.   August 31, 2008

I really liked this game, and it brought me back to the good ol' days of R-Type and Gradius before everything went crazy 3-D.

The game has a great soundtrack that never got boring, and amazing visuals.

It's got quite a few different play modes too, including some challenge rounds that unlock mini games like an Araknoid ripoff which are pretty fun.

There were a few disappointments for me, though. I didn't think there were enough levels, or enough varieties of enemies, and the bosses take WAY too long to defeat. I also wish the special weapons were more useful, as I barely used any of them except in the challenges where they are necessary.

This was a great game to pass the time while on an airplane or waiting for the subway, which is exactly why I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars most underrated game on the DS   April 25, 2008

The game released without any fanfare, which is a shame because the first edition was the best looking game on the system, and this game is the only one that surpasses it. As a fan of shoot-em-ups, this game manages to maintain a very frantic momentum without slowing down, and the bosses, background, and executions are breathtaking. This is the title I show off to friends who complain about DS graphics.

4 out of 5 stars Surpasses the first game in every way   April 6, 2008

Nanostray 2 surpasses the original game in nearly every way, providing some more than solid, old school shooter action for the DS. For those unfamiliar with the first Nanostray, Nanostray 2 is an interstellar scrolling shooter that will bring back fond memories of those who grew up with games like Star Fox, R-Type, Einhander, and the like; as you encounter hordes of enemies across eight different planets. Offering a nice range of difficulty, Nanostray 2 ends up being quite challenging, yet enjoyable in its execution; more so than the first game ever did. The game also looks quite good, offering some great graphics and effects, with the overall presentation being very inviting. There are a few flaws to be found however, particularly with how frustrating and difficult the game can get. There are no mid-level save points to be had, and each planet offers a mini-boss and a final boss amid the hordes of enemies you'll be shooting and dodging. Once you run out of lives, you'll go right back to the beginning of the stage you met your demise, which may get a bit annoying. Not to mention that controling your ship via the D-pad just feels sluggish, and the game's multiplayer mode is disappointing. Flaws aside though, Nanostray 2 still offers plenty of enjoyable old-school shooter action, and in that respect alone, the game is worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully more fun and exciting than the first   March 20, 2008

I'm happy to say that Nanostray 2 dispels the myths about sequels. This shooter game is addictive and fun and is now my favorite DS game. I love it!

They've added a selection screen at the beginning of the game so that you can choose your level of difficulty. This adds tremendously to the replay value. You can play on an easier selection and then increase the level of difficulty as you improve.

There are several selections for gameplay. The main game is the Adventure mode. After you finish each mission and fight the boss at the end you unlock challenge groups which you can play in the Challenge mode. These are mini game shooters which are tons of fun in themselves. After you play and win the challenge group you unlock simulators which you can then play anytime in the Simulators selection. In addition there is an Arcade selection of games which are smaller mini segments from the main adventure game. There is also a setting for two players, using either one card or two cards. I haven't used this setting yet so I can't tell you the differences between the two.

As you can see there is a lot to do in this game. You definitely get your money's worth. The graphics are fantastic. It seems that a lot of time and thought was put into almost all parts of this game and it has paid off in hours and hours of fun, challenges and excitement.
