High definition graphics and lighting effects make for a spectacular looking game. View larger. | A Nightmare Turns to Life Alan Wake is a bestselling horror novelist who moved to the small town of Bright Falls, Washington after suffering from insomnia and depression. Wake is able to sleep again, but after he meets a mysterious woman, he begins to have terrible nightmares. As he puts these nightmares on paper for a new book, he soon notices that all the things that happen in his book are coming true right before his eyes. Using cinematic effects and technology such as real-time lighting, shadows and reflections, you'll be treated to a game that is oozing with atmosphere and able to invoke an emotional response from the player. The realistic environment features real-time weather and light changes that effect the game play for a remarkably immersive experience. Explore an Entire Town The town of Bright Falls is 100 square kilometers, and players will be able to roam through this incredibly detailed area any way they like, roaming the town or wandering out to the lakes, forest, satellite towns, and more. The game gives the player goals, but how he chooses to go about completing them is up to him. Clues are scattered throughout the town, and solving mysteries will require players to pay close attention to the little details. Intense Combat In addition to solving puzzles and exploration, the game also pushes players into serious action and combat; when night comes, creatures will take their best shots at Alan, and you'll have to be quick with strategy as well as weapons to beat them back. Alan Wake presents an unusual and new gaming experience that features a riveting, multi-layered story while giving the player the ability to freely roam a giant environment. It supports Dolby Digital sound and runs at a beautiful high-definition 720p.

The best game I hated playing. July 29, 2010 Mark R. Gaworecki (Alexandria, VA USA) Don't get me wrong, Alan Wake has a lot going for it. Graphically, the game is breathtaking. The visuals are some of the best that modern gaming has to offer. When it comes to sound, the creepy sound cues and the distorted voices of your adversaries are enough to make your skin crawl. As for general style, this game is soaking in it. Creepy imagery, great storytelling and the episodic nature contribute to what should be a fantastic game.
Unfortunately, the gameplay is absolutely terrible. You'll spend a good portion of the game with enemies endlessly spawning around you with no end in sight. Making it out of some encounters requires sheer luck. When it comes to difficulty, this game dishes it out in the form of cheap deaths, whether it be randomly falling off of a mountainside due to Alan's spastic hopping (that'd be the "jump" mechanic) or enemies appearing directly behind you with absolutely no chance to see or avoid them. Might I add that you really only fight two different enemies during the entire game? You have people and random pieces of flying junk. There is little or no variation in the gameplay, besides the number of enemies or what manner of tricks there are in the environment to dispose of them. In the unfortunate event that you happen to enter a vehicle, you'll be immediately disappointed to see that said vehicles handle like a washing machine with tires.
That said, I slogged through all of the terrible gameplay due to the thoroughly enthralling story. It's that good. So all in all, this is probably the best game that I hated playing. Please ignore the controller-shaped holes in my living room wall. :)
Compelled to play July 29, 2010 NecroComicon (The Inn at Innsmouth) We all have our dream games, and rarely if ever does a title live up to its possibilities. Alan Wake has been simmering on the back burner for awhile and I tried to avoid any coverage so as not to lessen the power of the story which for once I was hoping would surpass and stretch the medium of VG. Remedy has done just that releasing what is my favorite system exclusive for the 360. Everything that makes me keep firing up the console is here, a story that dares you to not follow it through to its wonderfully mysterious non conclusion, mostly addictive controls and gameplay that makes the whole 3rd person flashlight thing work for once. Moving Alan is not a chore but it can feel that way when you get a CHEAP kill from behind, and hey where are the custom soundtracks listed on the back? I would love to add some music to AW and was excited for this non-feature for once. However, the wind blows through the trees more hauntingly than I would have thought possible and the game oozes atmosphere and manages some humor amongst all of its dark pop-culture/literary points of reference. The soundtrack and audio f/x are top tier and the magic happens when you crank the sound in a dark room. The graphics could be better as this game starts to look prettier as it nears it conclusion and in its stellar first DLC episode The Signal. Fans of gaming and dark noir fiction are doing themselves a disservice if they fail to take a run, as these woods are lovely, dark, and DEEP. Exactly the kind of title I want to support with my gaming $.
A rare delight of story and gameplay. July 21, 2010 SCF (Denver, CO United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Crime novelist Alan Wake is a delightful character to play in this atmospheric and story-driven game. There are a number of memorable characters (Alan's agent, the brothers from Old Gods of Asgard, etc). The story is compelling and moves well, up to the end. Most importantly, the game mechanics feel solid - surprising since fighting with a pistol and a flash-light seems unwieldy. It even has a great sound-track. I never thought I'd hear Roy Orbison in a third-person-shooter.
The negatives are few: It feels like they were trying to stretch to a certain number of hours of gameplay. Like everyone else, I like more gameplay for my dollar. I just like it to be real game play and not filler. After about half way through, it seems like they started jamming in repetitive content (kill the same things in the same forests; rinse and repeat) just to pad out the game. This slows the story down just a little too much toward the end. The other problem is with the story's ultimate destination. It's a great ride up until the final moments, when it concludes with an unsatisfying event that leaves more questions than answers. Not "questions to be answered next time", but "how could someone have possibly known to do that?" questions.
It's a solid game that I would like to see more of - and the end does set it up for a sequel. I'm concerned that the low sales numbers may prevent this from happening. If you find it discounted at half price, it'd be a steal. If you enjoy games with a story and want to try something a little different than everything else you've tried, this is absolutely worth your time.
Wake Up. The Coffee is great. July 20, 2010 K-Rappa Dizzle (San Francisco, CA) Alan Wake is a shining example of storytelling in a video game. I must admit i knew very little of this game until I played it. The basic premise is Alan Wake is an Author who goes on a vacation with his wife to the small town of Bright Falls. Unbeknown to Alan his wife was hoping to rid him of his writers block as he hadn't written a hit novel in 3 years. Immediately the game falls into a dark and twisted world of reality, anguish, confusion, a bit of comedy and a lot of thrills. The game is played in an almost episodic way which is good if you only have time for an hour or two to play as the game catches you up with a Previously on Alan Wake..... Now, I had never heard of the show Twin Peaks before Alan Wake, and I never thought that a game could make me appreciate a show(or is it the other way around) as much as this did. As soon as I finished the game I watched Twin Peaks. The similarities of the two are there but they are subtle and somewhat intelligently placed. I will say the biggest selling point initially for me was the atmosphere. This game carries it in spades. Everything about the graphics will draw you in, The lighting, shadows, the vistas, rivers, mountains, it's amazing. Riding the boat into Bright Falls is both a visual and audible treat. I immediately noticed the music as exceptionally standout. Now as much as i've gushed over this game it is not without it's faults. I will tell you that the combat in this game is a lot of fun. It seems perfectly in tune and tight. Well, the enemy variety is lacking. As in 6 or so different character models, some stronger/faster than others...oh and birds. There are possessed objects in the game but there more annoying and rarer to come across than the main enemies. I was surprised that there weren't any wildlife. As in none. Some chapters are longer than others(lookin' at you chpt. 3) but overall this a finely paced and tight game. The ending of this game left me satisfied and wonderfully perplexed. It is quite fun to go online after playing this game and checking others thoughts and theories of the ending. I will say right now, do not go online and read about Alan Wake at all. Don't spoil this deliciously crafted tale of madness and love.
Great Game, Bad Timing. 9 out of ten stars. July 19, 2010 J. Quarterman (Phoenix, Az. Earth) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This in my opinion so far, is Game of The Year. It's just a victim of coming out the same day that Red Dead Redemption came out....
The graphics are spot on....Gameplay is amazing, and there isn't enough space for me to put all the great things about this game that it has to offer. Now while Red Dead will end up selling more copies, I think this is Game of the Year in the sense, that this is an Original Idea. Now while I also have Red Dead and think it is the Best Western game I have EVER played, it more or less is just GTA reskinned for the Wild West.
If you get anything from this review, understand that this is a great, great, great game, you should give it a chance, especially since its being dropped in price now due to slow sales. I all but guarantee, if you like games like Res Evil, Silent Hill etc, etc, you will NOT be disappointed by this offering.
