The Story
Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock, the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past. Along the Atlantic coastline, a monster — somehow familiar, yet still quite different from anything ever seen — has been snatching little girls and bringing them back to the undersea city. It is a Big Sister, new denizens of Rapture who were once one of the forgotten little girls known as Little Sisters, known to inhabit the city's dank halls. No longer a pawn used to harvest ADAM, the dangerously powerful gene-altering lifeblood of Rapture, from the bodies of others and in turn run the risk of being harvested herself, the Big Sister is now the fastest and most powerful thing in Rapture. You, on the other hand are the very first Big Daddy, in fact the prototype, that for some reason has reactivated. You are similar to the Big Daddies familiar from the original BioShock, but also very different in that you possess free will and no memory of the events of the past ten years. The question is, as you travel through the decrepit and beautiful fallen city beneath the waves, hunting for answers and the solution to your own survival, are you really the hunter, or the hunted?

Gameplay and Multiplayer
In BioShock 2 players will take on the role of the original Big Daddy, not that of game one protagonist, Jack. As a Big Daddy you will have access to all the strengths and weapons of a standard Big Daddy, including the drill and rivet gun. More importantly you also possess free will and the ability to use plasmids and gene tonics — genetic modifications allowed for through ADAM, a stem cell harvested from conquered enemies, or sea slugs outside the Rapture air lock, and powered by the in-game injectable serum known as EVE, which can be found, captured or purchased. Plasmids and gene tonics provide a wide range of aggressive and passive abilities which can be upgraded and arranged for quick use. The ability to use plasmids and tonics gives you a decided edge over other Big Daddies and most other denizens of Rapture, excluding the powerful Big Sisters. In addition, due to their role as a Big Daddy, players will experience a new relation to the Little Sisters. Upon defeating standard Big Daddys you are given the familiar choice as to whether to harvest or adopt them. Harvesting gains you ADAM immediately, but could alter your path through the game, while adopting makes you responsible for Little Sisters, who then accompany you through Rapture, but also provide aid and warning in times of danger. Additional gameplay features include: new plasmids, weapons and the ability to combine these two.

The game also features the anticipated multiplayer modes. Several of these are team-based, allowing up to 10 players. Within these players are provided with a rich prequel experience that expands the origins of the BioShock fiction, and allows you to play as one of several characters pulled from Rapture's history before the events of the first game.

Key Features

  • The Big Sister - No longer just something to be harvested or not, the Big Sister is the most powerful resident in Rapture.
  • You Are the Big Daddy - Take control with the original prototype Big Daddy, and experience the power and raw strength of Rapture’s most feared denizens as you battle powerful new enemies.
  • New Plasmids - New plasmids such as "Aero Dash" allowing for bursts of speed over short distances, and "Geyser Trap" a stream of water used as a jump pad and electrical conductor, join the ample list of Plasmids from the original game.
  • New Game Mechanics - BioShock 2 contains many new gameplay mechanics. Just a few of these are: the ability to wield plasmids and weapons simultaneously; flashback missions detailing how you became the Big Daddy; the ability to walk outside the airlocks of Rapture to discover new play areas, and many more.
  • New Locations - Just a few of the locations and environments debuting in BioShock 2 are Fontaine Futuristics, headquarters of Fontaine's business empire and the Kashmir Restaurant.
  • Evolution of the Genetically Enhanced Shooter - Innovative advances bring new depth and dimension to each encounter, allowing players to create exciting combinations to fit their style of gameplay.
  • Return to Rapture - Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock, the story continues with an epic, more intense journey through one of the most captivating and terrifying fictional worlds ever created.
  • Genetically Enhanced Multiplayer - Earn experience points during gameplay to earn access to new weapons, plasmids and tonics that can be used to create hundreds of different combinations.
  • Experience Rapture’s Civil War - Players will step into the shoes of Rapture's citizens and take direct part in the civil war that tore Rapture apart.
  • See Rapture Before the Fall - Experience Rapture before it was reclaimed by the ocean and engage in combat over iconic environments in locations such as Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites, all of which have been reworked from the ground up for multiplayer.

3 out of 5 stars A pale shadow of the first game   March 10, 2010
Howard D. Fisher (Ohio, United States)
I'll admit up front that I'm biased by my love of the first game. That story was cinematic, that gameplay was fast and fun, and those graphics were incredible. I pre-ordered the second game right away and just finished it.

Where the first game was about the fall of a utopia and the corruption of the leaders involved in its creation (power corrupts, etc.), this game is about the attempted resurrection of that utopia by any means necessary, in this case the abduction of children, basically putting forth the moral that the ends do not justify the means. A great idea, but the straightforward storytelling this time around really hampers everything. The first 2/3 of the game contains no storytelling surprises; the characters involved this time around are only moderately interesting; and the father/mother rivalry, while novel at first, is repeated so often with no further developments in the story arc that it became a yawn halfway through.

The new gameplay aspects sounded interesting before I bought the game, especially the idea of playing the entire game as a Big Daddy - something the first game only allowed me to do for the final boss battle. Unfortunately, the developers chose to "balance" the game by rewriting what it meant to be a "Big Daddy." This Big Daddy apparently wears spandex for armor because at the beginning of the game he dies after a couple good whacks from a wrench-wielding splicer, and he burns through Adam about as fast as a Hummer burning gasoline on the Autobohn. A better balancing act would have been to ratchet up the splicers' individual lethality or to have the splicers hunt in packs like wolves. One Big Daddy against a pack of coordinated splicers would have been a pretty sweet fight. Instead the developers gave us "Not-So-Big Daddy" against the same bad guys copied-and-pasted from the first game. At that rate I could have just replayed the first game (again).

The graphics are about as good as they were in the first game, but everything this time has a real been-here/seen-that feel to it. I enjoyed exploring new areas that weren't in the first game, such as the prisons and the nurseries (and I especially enjoyed the idea that a "utopia" would need prisons and rehabilitation - er, brainwashing - facilities), but there wasn't enough truly new stuff in the environments to instill in me that same sense of awe that I had playing the first game. And wandering around the ocean floor outside of Rapture was fun the first time I did it but bloody boring after that since there is almost nothing to do outside the buildings. Even the one shark I saw just ignored me and swam by.

I never played the multi-player so I cannot comment on that. I played the first Bioshock for the story, and I always planned to play the second one for that same reason. Unfortunately, this game failed to deliver. The story is mediocre, the new gameplay elements are only kind of fun, there was no game-changing twist like the first game had, and by the last four hours of playing this game the whole thing simply became for me an end-run to the final cutscene so I could say I finished it and then play something else. It's fun, but it's certainly not worth full price - unfortunately. Rent it or wait for the price to come down significantly. In the meantime, play the first Bioshock again. It's a far better, far more rewarding experience.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!   March 9, 2010

Game is what you expect if you played the first Bioshock although to me it lacks a little creepy factor that I most enjoyed in the first game it's still a really cool fun game. The multiplayer for me is much easier to play as oposed to a cod or halo multiplayer that can be hard to adapt to at least with the plasmids in this game you get a chance to kill people lol but all in all well worth the $$ spent : )

4 out of 5 stars Great game, story falls a bit shot but multiplayer is very different   March 9, 2010
Ryan Shanny (Newton, MASS USA)
I walked into this game with some doubt even with the stellar reviews i could not imagine a good sequel for bioshock the master of fps story lines. The story starts out with a bang but slows down until the end of the entire game. The rest of the game is composed of the train is stuck kill someone to get it working again. That, for me, was the worst part of the game even though they made rapture such a nice place to explore i got tired of walking around to get my train to work once again. But never fear the game will pick back up later on, i wont spoil anything. The ending was very satisfying, its nothing like bioshock's one weakness, its ending. The multiplayer is very different and it is surprisingly fun. When i picked this game up the last thing i thought was i was going to play the multiplayer but while i type this review i can not wait to get back to playing. The plasmids and the different way the tonics all blend into the multiplayer experience gives bioshock 2 its own place in FPS multiplayer history. Its its own unique thing that is actually being supported the first DLC is coming out soon and looks very cool. Over all i would say that you should pick this game out. Sure the storyline is not bioshock one but it is still very good and rivals most other games that are put out anyways. Its a must have ^^ If you do pick it up or any other game add me PSN - Thetijessop Xbox - Soaring Spoon

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!   March 9, 2010

I bought this for my husband for his birthday! He absolutely loves it (he's playing right now!). He finished Bioshock, so what better present than Bioshock 2.

5 out of 5 stars My two year old is concerned for the little girls...   March 8, 2010
Lisa
When I saw my husband playing this in front of her I made him stop, so now he plays after her bedtime. Bought this for my husband, he absolutely loves this game... he's is a little psychotic, so all the gore and darkness was super good times for him. He did have a little difficulty playing at night as anytime he heard a noise, he'd jump through his skin, he's a jumpy-psycho. My brother on the otherhand was disturbed by this game, too much so that playing with the lights on wasn't helping, so he settled on CoD.

Personally, I love this game, it's been about 2 weeks since I've seen my husband.
