Outstanding Graphics
Ubisoft developed the Dunia Engine specifically for Far Cry 2. Among other things, the Dunia Engine delivers realistic, interactive environments, special effects, real-time night-and-day cycles, and smart enemy AI.

Expansive, Realistic Environment
Far Cry 2 is set in a fictional region of Africa where you are caught between two rival factions at war. The Ubisoft team spent a lot of time filming and photographing in Africa to get all the details of the landscape and native wildlife. The result is a huge gameplay area that is 50 square kilometers, taking players into and out of the jungle and savannah. Wild animals such as zebras, buffalo, gazelle are encountered during the game, with both players and enemies allowed to interact with them.

Far Cry 2 features an incredible level of detail and realism, with a minimal in-game interface to detract from immersion. For example, players will need to navigate the world using an in-game map and navigation system, weapons will disintegrate over time, and fires will spread and propagate.

Each of the actions a player takes is reflected in the environment and changes the content of the game. To fulfill your mission, you need to play the enemies against each other, using both strategy and skill.

Huge Range of Weapons and Vehicles
Far Cry 2 offers gamers a wide range of weapons, from a machete for hand-to-hand combat, to a sniper rifle that can stealthily pluck off enemies from afar. As weapons disintegrate over time, they might jam or even explode in your hand.

There are also a large range of vehicles such as gliders, trucks, cars, and boats that will let you fly, drive, slide, and hover over the open landscapes.

Multiplayer Options for up to 16 Players
Far Cry 2 supports up to 16 players and has four gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Uprising. Players can choose from six different classes in multiplayer, each with its own set of pros and cons. Just as in the single-player mode, multiplayer games will feature dynamic elements, making each session unique.

You can explore the world of Far Cry 2 from inside a car or flying on a glider.

4 out of 5 stars Far and away (from FPSes that is)   November 14, 2008
AMP (Somewhere on Earth)
The Good Things
*One huge world to explore freely (as opposed to individual levels). It is an interesting environment.
*I think it reflects Africa pretty well. Other aspects (shooting, driving, exploring) reflects real-life activities well too. It's a little more realistic than I thought it would be.
*Seems to have a good amount of interactivity. There are quite a few different weapons, vehicles, and items to use, and they are all used very realistically (guns have a recoil, you can use a scope to mark things on your map, and you drive vehicles from 1st person perspective). You even have to fight off malaria with medicine.
*Has an interesting story with okay characters. In fact, part of playing the game involves meeting and gaining reputation with NPCs.
*Good sound design.
*Includes a level editor.
*Includes some multiplayer games.

The Bad Things
*Not a full high-definition game (720p maximum resolution). Graphics are generally okay, but nothing to really scream about.
*A.I. is not the smartest.
*One long opening. Don't expect to shoot things right away.

Even though it looks like an first-person-shooter, it's really more like a role-playing-game. You don't get nonstop action; you get a world to explore and move around in, and then as you go on missions, you run across some bits of action. For the most part, it's the envrionment and the interactivity of it that is interesting. Patient players may enjoy it, but if you're looking to blow stuff up right away, you may be dissapointed.

2 out of 5 stars All gone, great tradition of Far Cry   November 9, 2008

All FPS fan should remember and still play the overall exiting gameplay of the original Far Cry has given..
In this matter, I should say, Is this a real Far Cry 2? It seems like Far AWAY Cry. You should go long long AWAY to get objective spot through repetitively killing guards again and again. What an odd mixture of FPS and boring part of GTA-like go around in vain. some diamonds are ridiculously difficult to find. Sometimes, too much ambitious move is likely to go deep into the disaster like our freaking economy. Very frustrating addition to the GREAT FAR CRY Franchise...

4 out of 5 stars Far Cry 2 - Eventually a Great Game!   October 30, 2008

I bought this game because of all the hype and I did like the first one. When you start though you are very limited in what you can do. For example, if you leave a path, you die. The game was very frustrating to do because of lack of save points and dieing. Finally after you beat the tutorial (that I didn't know that I was in) the game opens up into a free roamer like it was advertised, gives you a lot more save points, and even gives you a "friend" to help you when you go down in battle. It is a very lush and great graphical game. It does submerge you into the jungle. I have been playing it a lot and getting more and more comfortable with it. It is a great game and UBISOFT stays inline with great produced games.

1 out of 5 stars If Ubisoft says it's great, then it must be   October 30, 2008

The game is super buggy, which becomes super annoying. I've been on Ubisoft's tech forums for this game and the list of complaints is ridiculously long, and growing. And the after release support, which was promised, is nowhere to be found, but that is typical for Ubisoft - take the money and run. This game was probably released about 6 months to a year before it was actually ready. People should feel ripped off, because with more time, this game had the potential to be something great.

I completed it to about 40%, and then took it back to gamestop to exchange for another game. The AI is really bad. The graphics are good, but inconsistent. The color palate consists of shades of brown, and then some more brown. The main storyline is ok, but becomes somewhat irrelevant, because you have to kill the same guards at the same checkpoints over and over and over etc, every time you try to do anything or go anywhere. The side missions are also repetitive; literally, you will repeat the same exact mission over and over, just in different locations. Did I mention the AI is terrible? It's pretty easy to play, I only died twice. It is entertaining to a point, and then it becomes tiresome. Ultimately, it is too flawed to be considered worth buying.

If you're looking for a game that has rain, day and night cycles, sunrises and sunsets, set in a world where everything is a shade of brown, then this is an amazing game (really, that is what the developers spent most of their budget on). If you are looking to buy a cutting-edge next-gen shooter, I would recommend Call of Duty 4 or World at War.
