Product Description
Assume the role of Union and Confederate soldiers fighting behind enemy lines in legendary battles with HISTORY Civil War: Secret Missions. Your goal is to disrupt the armies of both the North and the South by any means necessary, including conducting train raids, stealing ironclad ships, stopping enemy supply lines, destroying enemy artillery and more. All events are drawn from the real life actions of famous partisans, scouts and rangers - fight as a member of Mosby's Rangers, Sheridan's Scouts and Grant's Secret Service and receive your mission commands from famous generals including Robert E. Lee, "Stonewall" Jackson, and Ulysses Grant. The action accurately reflects the guerrilla tactics of the time period. Weapons include the shotgun, the pepperbox revolver and the coffee mill gun, and there is heavy reliance on scouts and naval warfare.

3 out of 5 stars It's fun but too short   January 8, 2010

It's really fun to try the different weapons but the amount of unique game play is very short. Expect to have a lot of fun playing this for a couple of hours but then leave it on a shelf

The History Channel's Civil War: Secret missions is their second Civil War video game. If you played the first (A Nation Divided) you will notice many improvements, especially in AI soldiers. AI infantry ducks and covers, avoids being shot at much better than in the first. Otherwise the perameters are similar: levels involve clearing enemies and destroying targets. There is a gatling gun and naval mission.

Overall the missions are longer than the first Civil War game, but it keeps much of the flavor of the original. Secret Missions places you in some of the most important and pivotal moments of the Civil War and in a way that few games can realize, makes you get up and close with your opponents because your weapons have limited range, limited ammo, and relatively long reload times. It must have been a brutal war.

Of course there would be SO MUCH MORE that could be done with the game. I can only imagine larger battlefields if there were a multiplayer (you and buddies to practice volley firing, charging en masse with bayonets), but alas this is not possible.

This is enjoyable afternoon on easy and can be quite a challenge on higher levels. Anyone with connections over at History Channel, let them know: the game is a blast but multiplayer would have made it possible to truly re-create some of the greatest moments of the Civil War (Third installment please????)

3 out of 5 stars Xbox 360: Nice, but could be better   May 8, 2009

I received this game as a gift for Christmas from my wife. I played the heck out of it for a few days and still pick it up from time to time.

It's not a bad game....but it could be a lot better. Coming from playing the Call of Duty series, it makes the CW: Secrets Missions look like a cheap knock-off. It's not. It's actually an ok game but is definitely not the same caliber as Call of Duty. For instance, the AI is ok but not great, and the graphics standing-still are pretty good, but there is some noticeable flicker and pop-up.

Sound and dialogue are pretty good but the 'screams' and 'yells' get really annoying after a while; it's always the same person screaming, and it sounds overly rehearsed.

Graphics: A- (pop-up and frame-rate are poor; good detail otherwise)

Sound: C+ (ok dialogue, annoying screams/yells...overly rehearsed actors)

Gameplay: B+ (decent)

Fun: B- (...not bad, could be better. Easy way to kill 30min-1hr. Don't worry, I rated Call of Duty 3 worse than this)

All in all, I'd say CW: Secret Missions is worth $20 but not much more than that; if you can grab it used, even better! :)

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for a Civil War FPS.   November 28, 2008

For a Civil War FPS (expect Medal of Honor meets "Gettysburg" the movie), this is actually a pretty good game. Much better that the History Channel's last attempt at the Civial War, but nothing ground breaking. Support AI is worthless but the period weapons handle fairly well and the level design and graphics look nice but the character design and graphics are weak. There are two segments of rail shooting, one firing a cannon from a ship and another shooting a Gatlin Gun from a train, both were pretty pathetic. Otherwise, I thought it was a great rental and I may buy used when it goes for under $25.
