5 out of 5 stars The ultimate package for any Gears fan   July 12, 2010
Tiz
If you don't own Gears of War 2 this is the edition to get, if you haven't downloaded the DLC this is the edition to get. The addition of all the map packs for a discounted price overall makes this a brilliant product. Need I say more about the single player and horde? It is gears of war, its epic. People complain the multiplayer is broken, but it works just fine 98% of the time, and if you have issues, bots are always fun to play with.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Games sequal to classic GOW is Epic   July 7, 2010
J. Rodr (Mexico)
To put it simple, this game is worth it, my wife and i played the whole story together, i was very pleased with the story wich is way better than the first GOW.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who ever played and liked the Contra series. Maybe its not the same gender or same gameplay, but it did remind me of it.

After playing this game i have high expectations to Gears of War 3 wich is coming out april 2011.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first in almost every way   June 28, 2010

This is the game I really wanted to review. I posted a short gears 1 review because I felt since I owned both games and purchased both on amazon I should. But anyway, on to the gears 2 review. Gears of War 2 is the closest to perfect you'll ever get; I know I said Modern Warfare 2 was probably the best game of all time, but this is competing for that title.

THE PROS:
+Continues the sory fantastically and answers unanswered questions from gears 1(Adam Fenix and the Locust Queen)
+Multiplayer is a HUGE improvement; Horde and Annex are amazing!
+New weapons are added
+This bundle comes with all the map packs
+Multiplayer maps are better than those of gears 1
+Longer campaign than gears 1
+More unique executions (10 more than gears 1)
+Meatshields!

When RAAM inpaled Lieutenant Kim in gears 1, we heard a mysterious voice. We heard it again at the end of gears 1. It was the voice of the Locust Queen, but we did not know that until gears 2 revealed it. The issue of Adam Fenix is not solved in gears 2, but we do hear him speak and learn of his brilliant idea to end the Locust Horde forever. Multiplayer in gears 2 is an enormous improvement over gears 1. Respawning is relatively immediate in the new mode Annex, and I think it might be in other modes as well, but I'm not sure because I haven't been playing much multiplayer. The shotgun duels still occur, but now the maps have been improved by being bigger, at least ALLOWING you to get a kill with a weapon other than the gnasher shotgun. Horde mode, in which you team up with 4 other players and battle waves of AI controlled locust (50 waves in all) is also incredible. New weapons that were not in gears 1 include the scorcher flamethrower, the mortar, the mulcher, the gorgon pistol, the ink grenade, and the boomshield. To offer quick explanations, the flamethrower is a short range beast that incinerates anyone within range after a few seconds of steady flame. The mortar is a hefty gun that reduces your speed, but next to the sniper, it is the king of long range accuracy and damage when it is planted on the ground. The mulcher is basically a troika that you can pick up and move around and fire from the hip (best at close range, wildly innacurate, but quicker and easy to take someone out with) or mounted on a stable surface (better for long range, gives you an aiming reticle, but takes a while to mount). The gorgon pistol is by far the best pistol because it is a 6 round burst pistol that is pretty accurate so it can almost be used as an assault rifle. The gorgon is by far the best pistol to use with meat and boomshields. The ink grenade can be planted as a trip mine or thrown. It makes an area toxic for a few seconds, and anyone standing inside the area loses health at a fairly alarming rate. (If you are in an ink grenade's radius on insane difficulty the ink grenade by itself will kill you in around 3 seconds. With locust shooting at you, you really only have about a second to get your ass out of there.)The boomshield is a huge bullet proof shield. It does not restrict your speed unless it is deployed. The shield only protects you when deployed, but if you really need to sprint somewhere it won't kill you to undeploy your shield, sprint, and redeploy. You cannot mantle or roll with it. It has its own execution in which you wack a locust's head with your shield. You can only use a pistol when using a boomshield, and I recommend having a gorgon or at least a boltok magnum. The hammerburst has also been modified and no longer has 3 round burst. It can now be shot single shot semi automatic of fully automatic. The campaign in gears 2 is about 2 chapters longer than gears 1, 3 if you get the deleted scene. It's a nice addition and it makes the 5th act of the game actually have some meaning. In gears 1 it was like the 3 chapter act 5 wasn't even there. There are a ton of cool executions, 11 in all, to kick enemies when they're down. One of those 11 is the good old curbstomp from gears 1. You can also pick up a downed enemy and use him as a meatshield, however eventually the shield will disentigrate and you cannot sprint, roll, or mantle with a meatshield. If you want to drop your meatshield, you can snap the locust's neck, killing it. I wish you could pick up DEAD enemies as shields, but the system works ok.

THE CONS:
-Cover system is not improved
-No real final boss like RAAM from gears 1

The cover system has not been improved, and the button for it is still overused. It reamains pretty frustrating, since a good amount of the game is spent behind cover. Also, there is no good final boss. The three boss fights (Locust Fish, Skorge, and the Hydra) are great, but none of them are at the END. Completing a sci fi shooter is always fantastic when you have to kill an extremely challenging boss (for example RAAm from gears 1) to do it! The big lambent brumak you kill at the end can kill you, but you'd have to be stupid to allow that to happen. All it takes is a couple of shots with the hammer of dawn and it's dead. It doesn't even move. I also didn't really like the placement of the bosses. Gears 1 had a perfect placement. 1 at the end of Act 1 (Berserker), 1 at the end of Act 3(Corpser), 1 at the end of Act 5(RAAM). In gears 2 there is one at the end of Act 3 (Locust Fish), 1 at the end of Act 4 (Skorge), and one at the beginning of Act 5 (Hydra). Every boss uses the "rule of 3" in gears 2 however, which I like. 3 times damaging it and it's dead. The times in between damaging is spent dodging and killing minions and stuff like that. The boss placement in gears 1 was perfect, 1 at the beginning of the game, 1 in the middle, and 1 at the end. Gears 2 is all out of wack on that.

A COMPARISON TO A RIVAL
Despite the fact that they are both exclusive to Xbox, they are rivals, so I want to compare Gears to Halo for a second. Personally, I think gears is better for a few reasons.

-Gears has an original story
-Gears's characters have personalities
-Gears has a better movement system
-Gears has better graphics and more interesting environments

Gears's story that an alien race comes out of the center of the earth is ORIGINAL. Sure, anyone can come up with it, but it's still original. Halo is a COMPLETE rip off of Star Wars and/or Star Trek, as are Metroid and Mass Effect. Giant starships flying through space? Laser electric swords? Sounds a lot like Star Wars or Star Trek to me. Gears's characters have personalities. Dom is patient and kind, Marcus is impatient and fiery, Baird is sarcastic and a tech-head, and Cole is devoted to his job and, well... can't be stopped. Just like he says, nobody can stop the Cole Train baby! These are only a few of the characters. I could go on and on about the rest of them. Master Chief is just a regular dude on steroids or whatever who is in a 1,000 ton piece of metal who shoots aliens. We never even get to see his face and he's the freaking main character! In halo, you can't even sprint! All you can do is jump around like an idiot, crouch and walk slowly. In gears, you can get behind cover, sprint, and mantle. All essential for a shooter. Sure, I guess you can hide behind stuff in halo, but gears actually has a specific animation for being behind cover. In Halo, you can move quickly by getting into a vehicle, but you don't need to in gears to move quickly. Halo is trees and more trees. Sand and more sand. Metal and more metal. There aren't any diverse and interesting environments in Halo. Halo has great graphics, but gears of war dominates in that area by far. Even gears 1, realeased in 06, has better graphics that Halo 3: ODST, released in 2009. Pathetic. Gears alos has plenty of interesting envronments. The blood oozing heart and arteries inside the riftworm and the underground locust homeworld, Nexus, are only 2 examples of this. Halo has great multiplayer and the Forge map editor is cool, but the flaws I have pointed out drag it down beyond recovery. Gears is a better game than Halo. I own Halo, and I like it. But I love Gears of War 2. Get it.
