Thought the problem was with my car, but I guess not ... December 28, 2008 Erich D. Musick (Brookfield, WI) I picked up this device for $20 at Fry's the other day and had the same shoddy experience that many others have described. Before reading about others' experiences, I thought it might be the location of the cigarette adapter in my car (2002 BMW 330Ci), but I am no longer convinced that is the case.
The "auto tune" feature would land me on stations that either had a lot of static or were broadcasting loud and clear. So, I resorted to the manual tuning functionality.
When I finally found a relatively clear frequency (which is difficult in the Chicago suburbs), the volume of the iPod transmission was very very faint. I moved the wire around, placing it on top of my dash, wrapping it around my iPod mount, etc, and that helped only somewhat. This reminded me of when I was a child, always adjusting the rabbit ear antenna trying to get better reception on the TV. I think the cause of this problem is that the transmitter's signal is very weak, and therefore does not overpower any other garbage that is on the airwaves.
When I got out of the Chicago area on my way to Decatur, the open frequencies were clear enough to allow the LiquidFM Deluxe to work all right. Not having tried other FM transmitters with my iPod, I can't speak to the clarity as compared to other devices. But, I'm convinced it could be better.
Because most of my driving takes place between Chicago and Milwaukee, I will be returning this item promptly.
Utter rubbish, do NOT buy this. December 26, 2008 C. Edwards Wow. My first review and only because this product is so bad it's scary. Truly horrifically atrocious. It's not just that I'm ultra-picky or somthing, I promise you if it was even SLIGHTLY acceptable I'd be happy with it. The "clearseek" picks up the strongest radio stations (duh...) and when you do get transmitter and radio in line, the static interference is so bad it's unlistenable.
Do NOT waste your money. The positive reviews in here are obviously from Kensington "plants" trying to hang on to revenue streams.
Oh, the good times... September 16, 2008 :: ultranol :: (Brazil) My old Kensington radio transmitter (a white one) has almost two years of use, so it is getting worn out, like, the wire has a bad contact, it's dirty, so, I thought: let's buy the new one. Even with some bad reviews, I decided to give it a chance, because if the company could make a product that good as it was the case of the previous transmitter, things could not go that bad, right? Then, after I got it, I tried to use this product in: big cities, roads in the middle of the nowhere, different stations, different countries... all with the same result: complete and utter failure. It's like if the signal that it emits was in 10% of what the old white transmitter used to produce. Epic failure. I read somewhere that the US regulations forced them to do that, to lower the potency of the signal... if that's the case, they should stop making these things. It's better than trying to sell something that doesn't work. Now I'm thinking of how to fix the old transmitter...
Threw it out the window! July 22, 2008 A. Hettrick (CT) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After less than 10 minutes of having this device that Kensington mailed me for free to replace an older worn down model, this thing found itself on the highway complete with the instructions so hopefully some highway worker has an iPod...but with how crappy this thing picks up signals he won't get much use out of it either!
Form your own opinion!! July 19, 2008 Chris Marciano (Boston, MA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For a while, I was the proud owner of a Kensington 33199 Digital FM Transmitter and Auto Charger for iPod (Black), yet, after much wear & tear, the wires became loose and it was time to get a new one. During my search, I stumbled upon the "Kensington LiquidFM(tm) Deluxe for iPod FM Transmitter K33424US", noticing that it was the most recent version of the one I had owned for about a year. Since I was pleased with my previous purchase, the obvious choice was to invest in this one. The choice became not-so-obvious, however, when I read these terrible reviews. Now I don't mean to call the other reviewers liars, but mine recently came in the mail, and I have yet to experience any of the nightmares some of these other customers have claimed to have experienced. So what is my advice? Form your own opinion! But keep in mind that if you live in a large city where there are apt to be hundreds of pirate radio stations, maybe you should put your money towards a Monster Cable iCarPlay iPod Cassette Adapter (AI CAS-ADPT) instead.
