Excellent for the price and application December 1, 2008 Frank P. Mora (Gallup, NM USA) I came across this little gem in our local Radio Shack -on sale. I asked if I could hear it before buying it and was impressed. What attracted me to it was the subwoofer out port. I had a powerful but unused 12" RCA subwoofer I wanted to use in my kitchen along with some high-mid satellite speakers mostly for listening to the recordings I mix of my drums and smooth jazz. I scoured the web for two speakers that had a subwoofer out port. The only thing I could find were professional but weak Edirol speakers that were too large (and too expensive) to fit on my kitchen server. I was using an older Logictec system with it's 10" subwoofer. It was decent but lacking in mid-range sound with the tiny satellites. I really like the RCA sub with the GPX sound bar. I only have the sub volume down at about 27% and the sound is great. I don't have an iPod but the two aux in ports are one more than I need. The radio is a plus but the receiver is very weak. I want I to get radio from our satellite receiver and modified ccraine FM transmitter for when my wife is downstairs but it doesn't come in very well. I haven't had time to mess with it and that's okay because my wife doesn't spend too much time in the kitchen. I do all the cooking. I record my drums with direct satellite radio feeds but this is still less than CD quality so the GPX is enough for faithful reproduction especially since I am recording on a Sony stereo cassette console. The power/volume is sufficient for my kitchen even though I like too listen to it loud. The sound is sufficient to extend well into the other rooms adjacent to the kitchen but is not necessary. Music systems in each room allow volumes not to be too loud in any room trying to extend to other rooms. This is something we enjoy with our satellite subscription and FM transmitter. We like a relatively constant sound pressure level (SPL) from room-to-room.
One of the best of its kind... November 24, 2008 S. McGee (New York, NY) This is one of the best iPod compact (relatively) speaker systems I have used -- and I have been through a fair number of them over the last few years. The stereo quality is very, very good for the money & size (it's not audiophile quality, but then life isn't perfect, either.) The sound and clarity are excellent, and I am delighted to be able to combine an iPod dock with a very good FM radio that offers sound that is several notches above the noise emitted by those clock-radio/iPod docks. I have two quibbles: the remote control design (which several other people have cited -- let's face it, which of us is more likely to adjust the bass settings than the volume??) and the function that theoretically allows me to preset radio stations, which doesn't want to work. Still, I give this four stars simply because for the price, I have yet to find a better system. You can pay far more and end up with far less (or a system that crashes with a month or two), as I have discovered. Its sleek design fits beautifully in my home office. I should note that I have not tried to use it as part of a home entertainment system, with a television set, so can't comment on that feature.
good stuff November 11, 2008 Valerie Donahoo (holly springs, nc) the seller got the speaker bar to me quickly. It's the best sound quality - but it's well worth the money! I am pleased with it.
Pretty much what I have been looking for.... November 5, 2008 K. Rowley (Austin, Texas United States) I bought my first iPod (120GB Classic) a little over a month ago, and have been trying to find something I like to use as a docking station. I didn't really like any of the dinky clock-radio ones. The inexpensive ones ($50-ish) I looked at looked like junk - I couldn't imagine getting any quality sound out of the speakers most of these units are equipped with. The more expensive units ($100-ish) I looked at didn't look much better. And I didn't really see anything I really liked among the more pricey ones ($150+).
Then tonight I ran across this iLive Sound Bar and it looked like what I wanted. On impulse I bought one (at Target - for $20 more than what I could have gotten it here at Amazon - Doh!). Unit was easy to setup - right now I'm just using it for my iPod, and some for radio. Later I plan on integrating this into a new A/V setup - as a center channel speaker.
Overall I really like this unit and think the sound quality is more than adequate for me. The one thing that I think could have been "better" - is the remote. It took me a few minutes to figure out that the "wheel" button was not the same as the control wheel on the iPod. There are separate buttons to control the Menu functions. I also agree with the other reviewer who thought that the bass / treble buttons should have been swapped with the volume controls. Personally, I tend to dislike remotes with small grids of tiny buttons set close to one another. On a plus side (least to me), the remote is pretty "big" (7" x 2") - I also dislike the little credit card sized remotes, as I then to misplace those.
Fantastic....IF September 10, 2008 Adam Porter (Decatur, IN USA) The sound is fantastic, IF you have your own external subwoofer to connect. Without it, there is little, if any bass. This replaced a broken stereo that I had connected to my computer. Sound isn't as deep as the shelf system was (obviously), but it's great for the price.
Since I already had a subwoofer (from the broken stereo), this was an unbelievable find, given the price!
3 Stars by itself. 5 Stars with an external subwoofer. Average of 4 Stars.
