A good, but not quite great system. December 18, 2008 Richard Aubin (Dallas, Texas USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have used this system in my house now for nearly a month and am quite pleased with it, but have a few issues that I think hold it back from being a five-star system. The system does what most folks would buy it for - it delivers reasonably good sound quality to a remote location - or multiple remote locations if you purchase additional speaker sets.
Set up was super-easy and worked right out of the box. The speaker power cords use a plastic "boot" to give a good fit - I had some difficulty in getting these hooked up right and it seems like a minor design issue.
Most speaker systems like this lack the ability to create substantial bass and try to find ways to boost it which usually end up mushing some sounds together, creating a "muddying effect" In this system, the bass is a wee bit muddy but not nearly as much as other "small speaker" systems. The degree of this can be minimized by using the equalizer controls - but those controls are limited to choosing a "genre" - direct eq access would be nice and should be something that could be added via a firmware upgrade (although the unit has a usb port, I don't know if it is possible for such an upgrade to be done). I would rate the sound quality as good for its purpose and the speakers can get quite loud (courtesy of their built-in amplifiers). We have a fairly small house and the speakers were loud enough to provide music for most of the house during a recent party. The range on the speakers is quite good and we experienced no interference problems, despite a house bristling with electronic gadgets - many directly in the signal path between the speakers and main unit.
The iPod navigation and sound was good. The FM tuner lacks an easy direct input method for a station and lacks some of the features found in state of the art FM radios, but it is digital and pulls in a good signal. The CD player was fine but had a tendency to occasionally skip - we tried this with multiple discs and once or twice for every disc, we would get a brief skip. Not a huge issue, but a bit annoying and I'll keep an eye on it and update as warranted.
The unit itself is attractive. I would note that the item picture shows the display to be a black display matching the face of the main unit. Actually, it is a grey LCD style screen with a black dot-matrix style print in it - very 90's. The face of the main unit is a glossy black plastic that smudges fairly easily - I found myself needing to hold the unit in order to close the ipod drawer, causing some smudges. The ipod seated in the drawer nicely and took a charge from it as well. The system is not really micro - the speakers are fairly large and heavy (it is, after all, a two-way wireless access point, amplifier and speaker in a single housing). To those who seek true wireless speakers, it is simply not practical to run this on any kind of battery pack - the goal here is to not have to run speaker wires from a main unit all across your home. Controls and features are decent, but where the unit is limited. There are a multitude of inputs in addition to the iPod input, you have an FM tuner, CD player, USB input, aux input and more. One of my real peeves is remotes that have controls that are not replicated on the unit itself - and that is the case here - eq and bass boost are not accessible via the main unit's flip down panel - so do not lose that remote! Also, the remote, as others have mentioned is an infrared remote. This is, of course, useless if you are in another room with your remotely mounted speakers. To be fair a remote that works on some form of rf (and thus from distant rooms) is apparently included with the sets of addiitonal speakers. What would really be nice is an LCD remote that gives you the information from the main unit's screen. While the speakers do have controls on them, the navigation via the speaker is difficult and who really wants to go over to a speaker to change the volume or track? I would buy an lcd remote accessory.
I think this system would really shine with multiple speakers. At some point I will probably buy at least one more set and will come back and edit the review accordingly. In summation, this system aspires what it sets out to do - with a little more polish, it is easily a five-star item.
You can carry the sound 100 feet away December 18, 2008 Simon Cleveland (USA) iSymphony's W2 system by far exceeded all my expectations for an iPOD, Radio and CD system. Indeed, it is a lot of system for the price.
Let's just talk about one feature that is worth all the money - the wireless speakers. For those of you who have wired surround sound, you'll know what I'm writing about. Remember when you bought and installed your old stereo speakers? Remember punching the holes in the dry walls, dragging tens of feet of cable around the kitchen, the living room and finally around the entertainment center? And did you clean up after yourself afterwards? And did your wife have something to say about the esthetics of wall after your handy job?
Well here is a way to save your troubles, to show mercy on your wall, yourself and your spouse. The W2 comes with 2 speakers that can be separated up to 100 feet away from the main system (and each other) and produce the best sound. Each of the speakers comes with its own power cord so you don't have to worry about batter life, just plug and play. The W2 comes with a picture manual that helps you pair each speaker to the station (it took me 10 seconds to do this) and when you turn off the system, the speakers shut down as well.
The W2 features are amazing. You can plug any generation iPOD as the system comes with countless docking shells. You have easily programmable radio (FM/AM), a digital clock and a nice remote. In case you lose the remote, the station has all the buttons you need to operate it. And yes, the CD system can play CD and CDRs with MP3 or WMA music files (hello? My car stereo can only play regular CDs. I'm tempted to take this system in my car).
I'm very satisfied with the W2 and recommend it as Christmas gift for all music lovers.
UTTER FAILURE December 17, 2008 Shaun Mathen (CHICAGO IL) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST FRUSTRATING PRODUCTS EVER CREATED BY I SYMPHONY. I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH ISYMPHONY TECHNICAL STAFF WHO DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE MANUAL FOR THE PRODUCT. THE IPOD DOESN'T GET RECOGNIZED BY THE DOCKING STATION. I RETURNED IT FOR ANOTHER ONE AND THE SAME PROBLEM. CD's WORK FINE BUT THE USB PORT DOESN"T EVEN RECOGNIZE THE IPOD EITHER. ISYMPHONY: GET YOU ACT TOGETHER!
IMPRESSIVE December 7, 2008 Candace Mike N Elmo (New York United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My husband LOVES his music and his various podcasts. It has been hard listening to them 'tho while working around the house doing construction etc. NOT ANY MORE !! The iSymphony is an amazing piece of equipment.
1. The docking station is a glossy black that blends well in most rooms. It is not very large..about 12 inches wide, 10 in tall and 4-5 deep. The iPod sits nicely in the middle. This makes it easy to place.
a. has slide out iPod tray w/flip down control panel which both fold back flat b. it is wall mountable
2. It has ultra clear sound for both music and vocals. It carries all the tones crisply making voices easy to hear and the music sounds like it was coming from a decent stereo system. It sounds just as good , perhaps better, than using the iPod w/ your headphones. And you can can crank it up without losing quality. It plays from multiple sources..iPod, USB stick, SD/MMC card and it has AUX-IN to use other media players(Zune etc.)
DOES NOT SAY IT WILL WORK FROM IPHONE, BUT it WORKS W/my iPhone 3G
3. Its sound travels through floors, walls, + rooms far away from where docking station is to the speakers in the room you are in, never losing the great quality sound.Includes basement and garage
(I am not a fussy listener but my husband is EXTREMELY critical of the audio in everything from TV to music to podcasts and he is planning on buying additional speakers to expand the unit.)
4. Looks, sound quality and the range the iSymphony has makes this an entirely premium product.
5. Speakers(almost forgot) look fine and also blend in well w/ decor. Of course they work great to make the sound so pleasing.
***incorporated are all of the Ipod controls and volume controls on speaker itself...play, pause, skip, and can be set for mono or stereo *****
HOWEVER< speakers may be wireless but require a power outlet...hopefully they'll make a rechargeable pack for this sweet system.
6. Remote works only in room w/ base station but speakers take care of that issue.
This is like having a stereo anywhere around home and garage !! Probably works just as good out on patio/yard/pool area...but it's been fall and winter in NY , so haven't been able to use there yet, but we'd feel safe in in saying, yES, its performance has been so excellent thus far from basement to attic to garage, outdoors seems like it would be a breeze to get quality music etc. outside using iSymphony wireless system.
Good Start December 7, 2008 Nathan M. Rose (Delray Beach, FL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ever since the invention of the iPod many electronic companies have been fighting for a spot with the "mini bedroom stereo". Enter the iSymphony W2 Stereo. It has dual alarm clocks, great wireless speakers, a usb, ipod, sd card, cd player attached to it, and a remote.
The iSymphony W2 gets a lot of things correct, and a few things wrong.
Pros: * Satellite Speakers -- Great sound for wireless speakers * All-in-one -- has everything you need for a bedroom unit * Compact -- great for small spaces
Cons: * Not a great clock -- when stereo is off it is hard to see the time * infrared remote -- Remote has a short range and must be aimed directly at the unit.
While the iSymphony might not be the best choice out there, it is certainly the best choice in it's class.
