Hard Driving Man Music! December 7, 2008 Whamo (San Clemente, California) J. Geil's Band in the 70's (saw them with the Eagles, who J. Geil's blew off the stage) didn't play in concert. What they did was ignite like a string of firecrackers. Other reviews emphasize Peter Wolf's showmanship. They were ALL showmen! They dressed in LOUD colors. The bass player wore a bright green suit and hat. Magic Dick had a HUGE AFRO, kind of like Phineas from the Furry Freak Brothers comix, with huge bell-bottom pants. J. Geil's wore a bright RED suit that sparkled and played a red guitar. The organ player had a weird SHAG AFRO. The drummer did crazy things with his drumsticks and wore an artist cap. Every song seemed to build into a CRESCENDO, as players traded solos. Peter Wolf was like Mick Jagger on steroids. He'd jump up to the beat at the right time for emphasis in a dramatic climactic rise, come down to Earth, and rise, rocking, again. What made Peter Wolf so much better than Mick Jagger (and I LOVE MICK JAGGER) was his rap. Talking introductions to songs are nothing new, but Peter Wolf's introductions were part poetry, part fairy tale, part theatre, and part comedy. The ones on this album are great, but in person, he'd announce cops were going to search the crowd for drugs, so you'd better throw your stuff onstage. All kinds of bags and joints were tossed on the stage when I saw them. He laughed, and said this So Cal venue was the highest place he'd ever played. But what about the music? "Hard Driving Man"; "Looking for a Lover"; "Homework"; "Whammer-Jammer"...all rhythm and blues done with maximum effort, driven by Magic Dick's harp, chopping organ and/or piano riffs, screaming guitar, thumping bass, and Wolf's screaming lead vocals. The musicians don't play with each other, it's more like they bounce off each other, getting higher and higher with each note. This albums one of the best classic rock albums, especially live albums, of all time, but it makes me want a DVD.
Whammer Jammer! September 18, 2008 Elvis Marino (Southern California) This short CD is a concise statement of all that is great about the J, Geils Band and classic rock!
the best September 2, 2008 Denny (Gainesville, Florida United States) The best live album by any band ever made. Simply incredible. Buy it, get enebriated, and play it loud.
It Ain't Nothin' But A Party May 21, 2008 G Money (Md usa) You gonna get it crazy tonight? I'll get down to it. You gonna get it all down, get it all night, get it alright, get it outta sight, get it down baby? BUY THIS NOW. PERIOD.
" Made Loud to be Played Loud" May 14, 2008 G. E. Williams (California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the album that captures the spirit of the roadhouse band. This is not the J. Guiles of the age of MTV. Along with Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run, Full house with the incomparable Whammer Jammer (which plays in the opening scene of the new Will Smith film "Hancock")is the essence of the rock club style of music.
If you want to know what good party music of the early 70's was like, you can't go wrong with Full House.
