What's this: a mutant, synth-heavy, dance pop trio led by a hot new-wave chick who sings in French? Umm, it's a bit early for the electroclash revival, isn't it? Thankfully, it is way too early for that, and this Paris-based act's North American debut is unabashedly entertaining, closer to garage-rock from the future than Chicks on Speed. The songs on Prototypes, collected from their first two French releases, are fluffy but delicious pastries, heavily pumped up with keyboards that veer from '60s- to '80s-ish, and guitars that sound vaguely pop-punk on one song and folk-rock the next. Prototypes' members come from the respected acts Bubble Star and Bosco, and sassy, sexy singer Isabelle Le Doussal has earned her comparisons to Karen O and Blondie. This is exactly what CSS, Hot Chip, and Phoenix should sound like. It's Stereo Total meets a French Huggy Bear, and they're either recording their own soundtrack to Liquid Sky, or a tribute to Plastic Betrand. How do you say "hooray" in French? --Mike McGonigal

Album Description
The infectious music of France's Prototypes is a skillful balance of large guitars and beautiful dance-floor beats that play homage to French new wave and the snotty dance rock of the 21st century. With sonic comparisons to Stereo Total, Elastica, and Les Rita Mitsouko, Prototypes hands you a cigarette, buys you a shot of absinthe, and leads you by the hand to the dance floor. Welcome to the party.

3 out of 5 stars Meh....Not So Great   August 2, 2008
M. West (Central United States)
I heard "Je ne te connais pas" on that Mitsubishi commercial (isn't that a lame way of finding new music?) and really liked it. I checked Prototypes out online and liked a couple of the other tracks that I heard, so I got the album. This is a fun CD with a few good tracks--I listen to them now as part of my gym-workout lineup. I don't think this is a CD I could listen to over and over again just for fun, but for energetic workout music, it's OK.

Even though I have no clue what they are saying, this is a great CD. It never gets boring. I always listen to it when I'm not sure what else to listen to, it puts me in a happy, energetic mood.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening...   February 19, 2008

I listened to just a couple thirty-second samples from this album on my headphones, and I bought the whole thing. I'm going on a week of listening to nothing but this. I don't speak French, but I know every word. (Kind of reminds me of that "Learn English" commercial!)

The music is really catchy but not overly trite to where you burn out on it easily. This really isn't my "main" kind of music, but I would group them somewhat with a couple other groups I like: CSS and Pizzicato Five. I have not gotten around to the gym since buying this, but I'm looking forward to hearing this while on the treadmill.

Now, I'm looking for other music in this same vein. Suggestions?

5 out of 5 stars Best of 2006   May 14, 2007

The great thing is, this band CAN'T break big in the U.S. due to the French vocals. All the Bill O'Reilly-type francophobes notwithstanding, Americans just can't deal with foreign languages. All the better, IMHO. Listen to the album, and pass it along to your friends like a good joint. The Prototypes will be our own private stash.
